October

October is nearly over and we have been busy in Room 104. We are finishing up our first writing unit called Lessons from the Masters: Improving Narrative Writing. We are learning about narrative writing, which we've called our "Small Moment" writing. We will share our writing with the other second graders and a few staff members at our writing celebration on October 31st. There will be a few other surprises in store that day also.

We have also finished up our first math unit which focused on patterning and measurement. Next we move in to addition and subtraction facts. Knowing facts fluently helps as we move into larger numbers later. We will try out Reflex Math in class on the iPads. Log-in information will be going home so students can also practice at home.

In reading we learned about taking charge of your reading, solving tricky words, and paying close attention to authors. We have now just started working with non-fiction text. We are learning that reading informational text is different than reading a fictional story. There are text features, special vocabulary and other important things to pay attention to as you read.

We have also begun our neighborhood Storyline unit. More information will be coming as we get further along in that project.
